The series Piazza d'Italia is one of the most iconic in Giorgio de Chirico's artistic production.
In these metaphysical places, where fragments of architecture from the past coexist with visions of the modern city, time is suspended, giving rise to urban still lifes. In De Chirico's poetics, public space, uninhabited by man, is populated by objects - such as ancient statues, ruins, porticoes, towers, chimneys, trains, mannequins - which, estranged from their usual context, emerge with all their iconic force, becoming unreal, mysterious and enigmatic.
